Smelting with Michael McCarthy. #400-0601. 2 Days.
(9:00 AM - 4:00 PM)
Adirondack Folk School, 51 Main Street, Lake Luzerne, NY 12846
What is smelting? It is a process that uses materials taken right from the earth, clay, iron ore, and fire, to create the iron that blacksmiths have used since the earliest times. The smelter created a bloom, which is the basic raw form of usable iron. New York State led the country in iron production before the Civil War and much of that iron was mined right here in the Adirondacks. In this class you will learn to build a clay furnace and prepare ore on the first day. Then learn the basics of smelting as you produce a bloom from Adirondack magnetite clay. This is a must-do class if you are interested in historic iron production or are keen about Adirondack history! You will greatly expand your knowledge of the unique characteristics of iron that make it ideal for forging. Smelting is a skill and art that has been kept alive by just a handful of artisan blacksmiths. You won't want to miss this class.

The Pea Cage Trellis, five feet or less tall, is useful to support the growing of vines. Fresh willow and other woods will be provided, as well as young willow for weaving. No previous rustic experience necessary. This is a fun and productive class! You should be prepared to work outside kneeling on the ground or standing and be physically flexible. ABOUT THE MUSIC: A singer and guitarist who is never afraid to look inward for inspiration and ready to analyze the world around him, Jason Gray says he is called to create music that makes a difference, and he continues to share that gift with passion and conviction on his new album. On his latest Centricity Music album, A Way To See In The Dark, Gray once again exercises his gift for channeling complex emotions and bold truths into songs that resonate strongly with his audience. His songs are personal yet universal. Who among us hasn't struggled with fear and wrestled with identity? Who hasn't exhaled in exasperation and breathed the name of God? Gray captures these vulnerable moments in such songs as "No Thief Like Fear," "Remind Me Who I Am" and "The Sound Of Our Breathing."

Dovetail Joinery with Tom Brady. #388-0715. 3 Days.
(9:00 AM - 4:00 PM)
Adirondack Folk School, 51 Main Street, Lake Luzerne, NY 12846
One of the most distinguishing marks of a true woodworking craftsperson is the ability to cut and fit perfect dovetail joints. Today dovetail joints are often cut with routers and jigs but woodworkers still use chisels, mallets, and skill to make joints which become more than the joining of wood, they become part of the art. You will learn about the importance of sharpening your chisels and many other details to make beautiful hand-cut dovetails. The object of this class isn't merely to build this beautiful keepsake box, but rather a project that will help you develop your skills in making clean, sharp dovetails. You will make dovetail joints on one end that are cut and then glued, while the other side will be cut so finely that the end piece is removable to showcase your new skills. This is a class for experienced woodworkers who want to "kick it up" a notch and have some fun.

The use of painted canvas floor coverings, also known as "oyl cloths", dates as far back as the 14th century in Europe. People coming to this country were looking for ways to reproduce some of the furnishings they were used to back home. Since resources were limited, worn sails from ships provided them with a base to paint and cover their floors. Over time floorcloths proved themselves to be one of the most durable forms of floor covering used. Centuries old pieces still remain intact with the pattern clearly visible.

Each song is hand-picked to be message-driven, and theologically sound. Their goal is to spread the message of the Gospel and encourage believers. They also have a popular YouTube series called, "Rollin' with the Ball Brothers" that offers an inside look into their ministry and lives on the road.

The Adirondack Pack Basket is one of the most recognized objects associated with the Adirondacks. Hold onto your hats, we're going to build toboggans. What could be more fun than learning how to make your own traditional toboggan and having it ready when the snow flies - whoosh! The class will incorporate basic woodworking skills, including working with patterns, cutting, fastening, and preparing the wood for finishing. In addition, you will learn how to steam bend your runners, along with a bit of history on how native people came to use the toboggan. A great class for both beginner and experienced woodworkers alike.
